New Telematics Statistics: How Driver Data Impacts Fleet Safety

Written by SambaSafety | Oct 16, 2024 3:45:49 PM

Fleet risk management solutions now heavily rely on telematics, which uses technology to track and evaluate driver and vehicle behavior. Telematics systems are being used by fleets to improve cost control, efficiency, safety and many other areas. Below, we uncover the latest telematics statistics from SambaSafety’s 2024 Telematics Report that uncover how fleets are optimizing their risk and safety operations. These new insights provide professionals with a deeper understanding of the impact telematics has across the industry and highlight the full potential of their telematics systems.

Latest Telematics Statistics Uncover a Shift in Perception

The way fleets view telematics has changed significantly. Previously seen as only an innovative or elective technology to enhance operational effectiveness, telematics is now recognized as an essential component of a robust driver safety culture.

Today, more than 90% of fleet operators say telematics is essential to their entire safety plan, and more than half say the technology has had a noticeable, beneficial effect on their safety initiatives.

These telematics statistics highlight the growing recognition of how crucial data-driven insights are in reducing driver risk. With near real-time visibility into driver behavior, telematics enables swift, targeted interventions that improve safety and performance.

The Use of Telematics in Enhancing Driver Training

Telematics is more than a vehicle tracking solution. It’s also leveraged more specifically to improve driver behavior and establish a more proactive approach to safety. A remarkable 74% of fleets now use telematics data to inform their driver training or coaching programs.

By analyzing metrics such as speeding and harsh braking, fleet managers can identify risky behaviors and provide tailored feedback and training to drivers. Nearly 33% of fleets report using this data extensively to coach their drivers.

The Challenge of Managing Multiple Telematics Systems

While telematics has proven its worth, managing a comprehensive safety program involves more than just a single tool. In fact, 72% of fleets are using two or more systems to handle their safety and risk management processes, with 33% of those fleets using four or more systems.

These statistics show the complexity many fleets face in compiling data from multiple sources – whether it's telematics, motor vehicle records (MVRs), Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) records, etc. As more fleets adopt various technologies, it will be challenging to harmonize these systems to maximize efficiency and reduce risks effectively.

Reducing Crashes and Improving Business Outcomes

The combination of driver training and telematics is proving to be a powerful formula for success. 72% of fleets report that integrating these two elements has directly resulted in a reduction in crashes and claims.

By identifying risky behaviors early and taking corrective action, companies are preventing crashes and lowering their insurance premiums. 25% of fleet operators have reported reduced premiums thanks to fewer violations and crashes, underscoring the financial incentives of a robust safety program powered by telematics.

Moreover, 28% of fleets have noted that telematics has improved driver retention and satisfaction. This is likely due to a combination of factors: drivers feel safer, more supported and see the value in a system and company that promotes their well-being on the road.
