Challenge

Secure Transport managed driver training through YouTube with no way to track completion, and lacked visibility into post-hire driving records. Without the tools to enforce accountability or demonstrate due diligence, their insurer recommended adopting a more automated approach to monitoring and training.

Results

By replacing YouTube with SambaSafety's integrated monitoring and training platform, Secure Transport achieved a 92.3% training completion rate, eliminated cell phone use violations, and built a documented safety program that satisfies their insurer's due diligence requirements.

About Secure Transport

Secure Transport is a locally owned and operated non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) service that has served the Kansas City Metro area since 2010. Despite operating in an unregulated industry, the company upholds rigorous safety and training standards, with a commitment to well-trained drivers, routine vehicle inspections, A-rated insurance coverage, and proactive intervention strategies.

The Challenge

Joe McDonald, Director of Safety and Training at Secure Transport, was dedicated to building a strong safety culture for his NEMT drivers. He used YouTube to manually assign 31 training videos for all new hires, plus multiple courses per week for each driver after hire. Many courses had to be created in-house due to the unique nature of their business. But YouTube offered no way to track views or completion, and with many drivers not being tech-savvy, ensuring accountability was a constant struggle.

Beyond training gaps, Secure Transport also lacked visibility into post-hire driving records, leaving the team without a clear picture of ongoing driver risk. At the suggestion of their insurer, they recognized the need for a technology-driven solution that could provide continuous monitoring and automate their training process.

The Solution

Secure Transport turned to SambaSafety’s continuous license monitoring to gain ongoing visibility into driver behavior, replacing the wait between annual MVR pulls with automated alerts. Shortly after, they integrated Online Driver Training to streamline their intervention and coaching efforts. Combined with risk scoring and configurable thresholds, the platform gave the team the insight and tools needed to make better hiring decisions, onboard new drivers faster, and address ongoing risks.

As McDonald explained: “Before SambaSafety, we used YouTube to administer driver training, but there was no way to track views or completion. With SambaSafety, I have a complete record of assigned and completed courses, letting me know who’s being proactive before I have to remind them.”

McDonald also noted the insurance benefits: "We instituted license monitoring and training at the recommendation of our insurer. It’s peace of mind for us, especially if there was ever a lawsuit. We’re able to prove we did our due diligence."

The Results

Enhanced Training Program

Secure Transport now distributes weekly training through SambaSafety, including their own in-house videos alongside SambaSafety’s tailored curriculum. Streamlined assignment workflows and comprehensive reporting have eliminated manual tracking and improved compliance with safety policies. The company achieved a 92.3% training completion rate in 2023 and gave SambaSafety's Online Driver Training a 5/5 rating in a 2024 customer survey.

Faster, More Effective Interventions

Common issues like tailgating, speeding, and drowsy driving are now addressed with targeted refresher training assigned from AI-recommended courses. Upon detecting an incident, McDonald can coach drivers and assign relevant courses to quickly address unsafe events. The company has completely eliminated cell phone use violations through continual training and coaching on the importance of this safety issue.

Improved Driver Awareness and Morale

Beyond correcting high-risk behavior, Secure Transport uses the platform to recognize and reward safe driving, boosting driver morale. Weekly training videos receive positive feedback from drivers, enhancing focus, engagement, and retention of critical skills.

Secured Insurance Coverage

McDonald and Secure Transport have relieved pressure from their captive insurer by leveraging license monitoring and online training. The company’s three-strike policy and probationary measures for unsafe behaviors help ensure continued coverage and motivate drivers to maintain safe practices.

Improved Reporting and Compliance

The digitized training program and built-in tracking provide peace of mind, ensuring the company takes all necessary safety measures and fulfills its due diligence in driver education.

McDonald summed up the partnership: “SambaSafety offers a great service and a great platform. It’s very user-friendly and can help with just about anything you’re looking to do when it comes to driver safety.”
