If you missed Steve Bryan, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Transportation, SambaSafety, and Daniel Murray, Senior Vice President, American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) telling the real story of violation data during the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s no need to fret.

With the webinar on-demand and some high-level highlights, you can learn further about:

  • Safety data and the level of commercial driving activity during the pandemic compared to pre-COVID-19, which has dropped exponentially.
    • This means that there is now a historic roadside inspection landscape that we being faced with.
  • Until these roadside inspections come back to normal levels, we will be dealing with a CSA system that is greatly weakened.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench in everything trucking-industry related, including what was looking to be a banner year.
    • The industry is clearly not the only impacted sector of the economy though. Whether the housing markets, truckloads or even retail sales, you can see downward trends.
  • There is a silver lining though within the industry that has to do with transformed perspective – truck drivers are essential workers and have been hailed as heroes for continuously keeping the economy moving.
    • Meanwhile, the federal government has backed off enforcement and motor carriers have relief from inspections.
  • With that relief from inspections though comes the concept that CSA data points are running empty, down 11 percent since March 8, 2020.
  • There are some numbers that are indicative of both changing roadway habits as well as the fortitude and pitfalls of the industry, including:
    • Over 60 percent of the industry has not had to lay off or furlough drivers or release any independent contractors.
    • Congestion is down. ATRI asked respondents they surveyed if congestion was reduced or has increased and 87 percen of respondents said that traffic congestion was reduced.
    • There is a big shift from long-haul trucking, with more drivers focusing on local and regional deliveries.
    • COVID-19 has caused changes to freight levels – the smaller the fleet, the bigger the hit they ended up taking economically.
