Don’t fret if you missed this week’s Transportation Brief with Steve Bryan, GM and EVP of Transportation alongside his guest, Joe Darby, Director of Risk Control and Safety of the Transportation and Logistics Practice with Aon.

Highlights as well as an on-demand recording from the conversation are available. Hear as Bryan and Darby spoke on top-of-mind issues and concerns regarding transportation, insurance, and circumstances currently facing the industry, including:

  • The rise of business continuity within the trucking industry, specifically when looking at driver orientation.
    • The lack of hands-on solutions right now doesn’t mean that there aren’t great solutions at hand.
  • The recommendation to pay attention to turnover for insurance carriers as they’re all over the spectrum due to some seeing their drivers hunker down.
    • For instance, if they have freight and are doing well, the turnover rate has decreased immensely.
  • For segmented industries that are booming or struggling, Joe Darby provided advice:
    • Claims people in the insurance industry have a keen ear and are listening to the good things going on in trucking.
      • It’s up to the carriers who are employing these truckers to ensure that they are telling the story.
    • With oil and gas, volatility that can be smoothed out and controlled should, including CDLs and not running over hours of service.
    • Hire quality and/or tenured drivers.
    • Tighten up some of the hiring guidelines that have previously existed.
  • How the transportation industry comes out of the other side of the pandemic maintaining safety measures and infrastructure investments.
    • There needs to be continuity in having transportation advocates involved with their specific legislators.
    • From an insurance risk perspective, people will partner with those that they feel are being good corporate citizens and are following parameters laid out by the FMCSA.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of those countermeasures and infrastructure investments that have taken place during the pandemic.
  • The lack of use surrounding FMCSA hours of service exemption.
