Missed this week’s Transportation Brief with Steve Bryan, GM and EVP of Transportation with SambaSafety, and guest Robert J. Boyich, CTP, EVP, CPC Logistics, Inc? We have you covered with highlights from the conversation and a recording you can watch on-demand.

This Transportation Brief webinar provided valuable perspective on the trucking industry and how COVID-19 has impacted recruiting, retention and the pandemonium surrounding certain highly coveted paper goods.

Highlights from the conversation included:

  • Those sheltered in place or in quarantine getting the supplies they need in a timely manner thanks to truckers, at the expense of more miles driven, fewer moments at home and fewer or more relaxed regulatory constraints. Fewer moments AWAY from home?
  • The average age of truckers being 48 to 52 years old and the implications COVID-19 has on their career.
    • This may mean some truckers believing they need to work and stay on the road longer due to the financial disruption caused while others have walked away or brought on retirement early due to fear of becoming sick.
  • Considerations surrounding driver and cargo security, including how to approach delivery points and the exposing of product to the outside world.
    • With unemployment and panic in the marketplace, drivers are seeing somewhat erratic behavior caused by fear in the general public.
    • In this instance, a driver pulled their cargo to the back of a store and as he was unloading product, was set upon by a group of individuals who had come to the back of the truck seeking paper product.
    • Store managers expecting cargo are stressing to truckers that drivers be careful in approaching delivery points and to take their time in passing out what is needed by people.
  • Staffing of private fleets and the new world of training during a pandemic.
    • The onboarding and training measures typically taken have had to change due to the number of people allowed in cabs at a time, as well as social distancing measures put forth.
  • Opportunities for new drivers to enter the workforce.
  • Ways that businesses and even individuals are helping to bolster morale and recognize the importance of truckers in America.

Overall, the general consensus that came out of this conversation was that the resurgence of trucker appreciation solidified what we all already knew: when truckers continue moving, America continues moving.

Join us next Thursday, April 9 at 10 a.m. MST with SambaSafety’s own Steve Bryan and guest Joe Darby, Director of Risk Control, Transportation and Logistics Practice at Aon, for the third installment of Transportation Brief as they discuss the current state of the transportation industry.
